As for the productions illustrated, several of them offer you the priceless opportunity to enjoy some of the most appalling kitsch that has ever passed for Wagner. These fellows have a gift for parody, one must admit that. Let me quote just one, presented by the Stuttgart State Opera in The love duet of the Prologue took place against the backdrop of a sepia 19th-century landscape, the irony accentuated by comically flickering colour strips at the front of the stage to represent the ring of fire.
The anti-heroic mode, sustained throughout the opera, was an extreme but hilarious exemplification of a trend seen in many Wagner productions of the final quarter of the 20th century. This is not among the illustrations.
