I worked through the acting out part of having hunger issues to saying I'm hungry to having him rate his his hunger on a scale of When I heard 10 I knew it was really serious. I will take the exaggeration to 10 much more so than possible head banging, going out in the hall and throwing pencils against the wall. I did apply the gentling approach during those days when he would act out in the class. I was able to cue him to go in the hallway, he would still throw pencils and rip papers and I would say to him, you seem to be angry, when you are ready I will be here waiting for you.
I always had a book about animals and would be pretend reading it until he would come over sit beside and start to read it silently. Patience and empathy is key with these children from what I have gathered from Mr. Krill's book I highly recommend this book to any teacher who works special ed, gen ed or gifted students.
Knowledge is power and knowing the signs of abuse in a child is most certainly knowledge needed so it is not interpreted as emotional disorder or defiance. Amazing book from a "how to perspective". I read it to understand myself better and how to gentle those psychological parts. I could see it being useful to parents or care-providers as well. As survivor of sexual abuse I found many of the theories presented to be from an accurate and "grounded" perspective.

Good print outs in book you can hand out to care providers such as teachers or anyone caring for the child or teen suffering with PTSD. I had purchased the e-book and found it a very informative book.
I then decided that I'd like to have the hardcopy as a quick reference source. Unfortunately, because many abused children end up being moved around in the foster care system, their treatments are interrupted.

If more professionals became familiar with Gentling, then there would be more people to pick up where others left off. Krill believes that victims of child abuse have their own version of PTSD. If this child does not receive appropriate treatment, the behaviors can become worse, more embedded and harder to treat. Therefore, I believe that it is essential that people who are involved with these children especially clinicians, parents, foster parents and teachers read "Gentling.
