As long as men make the rules of what quality writing must consist of, the author probably will never completely receive what she is due in respect or awards. But as for my opinion, there are few writers, literary or genre, who can fulfill both the requirements of providing reading entertainment, informing the reader about elements of class and society, while illuminating the truths of the human heart.
She truly sees men and women with a profound clarity. The writing of this series has not always attained the same heights as the author's understanding of people - until this book in the series. I think nothing reveals humanity as much as the novels of the mystery genre when written by good writers.
There are continuing threads of evolving relationships highlighting the author's growing literary mastery.
"The Inspector Lynley Mysteries" In Pursuit of the Proper Sinner (TV Episode ) - IMDb
I am reading all of the Elizabeth George novels in order -- and I encourage serious readers to do the same. George's writing is excellent, and the narratives are astonishingly rich and complex. This particular novel is worth reading -- and quite good -- but not among her best. Well, there's a certain amount of squalor which is overdone, and her style requires enormous patience, as one is introduced to characters in the beginning who have no context to one another. All becomes clear, but it's not easy going, as some of the negative reviews reflect.
So many things going on in this book. Elizabeth George kept them balanced. Loved it and have already started the next book in the series. The books have characters that I am able to care about and want to see what happens in their lives and then we have a great mystery added in. What more could you want. One person found this helpful.
Fiendishly clever and complex mysteries are what brought me to this series, and this tale of multiple suspects in a violent double murder does not disappoint.
In Pursuit of the Proper Sinner : An Inspector Lynley Novel: 9
But character development is what made me stay. As usual, the lessons learned in solving this mystery about the secrets families keep informs the sometimes painful growth in the relationship between Inspector Lynley and Detective Constable Havers and their friends and families.
This book tackles the opposite strengths and weaknesses that make them such a good if improbable team, as they remain estranged following a serious professional falling out. The more each character learns from the other the more I enjoy their company, and this was the best book yet in this series to do that. It is always pleasant to get involved once again in the destinies of Lynley, and Havers. I was mostly interested in their relationship this time around. The criminal intrigue was so and so. As a known French stylist and TV personality puts it when a woman wears too many disparate articles of clothes at once, there was too much information, not really coherent from the point of storyline, but I enjoyed the book all the same.
George is a master, of that, there is no doubt. There is no such thing as falling asleep as she unfolds all of the details that eventually coalesce into the final narrative. The plot twists and turns, the character development, and the beautiful sense of place, all make this a richly rewarding read. There is a lovely teaching aspect to her rendering of character. One can expect to expand one's knowledge of intimacy as well as personal differentiation..
The dynamics between the characters are real and true, albeit sometimes hard. I hated the style -- George inserts psychiatric journal writing entries in between the action chapters of the actual mystery to be solved. It would work if the entries weren't so long and obtuse. Lynley is a very compelling character and I look forward to more of the same. See all reviews. Most recent customer reviews. Published 28 days ago.

There were no paragraph gaps between changes in location or scenes and this meant a jump in concentration and having to read the sentences twice to relocate my mind as to the shift in scenario. There was also errors at the beginning of each chapter. This does not seem to have been proof read. One person found this helpful. When two bodies are found in the middle of a stone circle on a deserted moor, Lynley is called in. But the dead girl's father is an ex-undercover policeman and a previous mentor of Lynley himself and so, as in other books, his objectivity is challenged. Lots of this book is excellent: But George slips up a bit too: I don't want to go into details which would spoil the book for new readers but the conversations between Nicola and her father in London are completely unbelievable not to mention her demonstration!
Helen, now married to Lynley, is as irritating as ever any woman who can seriously spend days agonising over the wallpaper really needs to find something more useful to do and her own pondering of her relationship with her father just too pat and fake. But despite some quibbles, this is an engrossing read with a convoluted plot and excellent characters. If you like your thrillers with lots of action then this might well prove irritatingly bloated; otherwise this is another great escapist novel from George, though not her best.
I think those two are typical women, and totally lovable and adorable just as they are. They both make me laugh, and even cry sometimes.
