The characters are well developed and the dialogue is humorous, witty, and creative. Dec 01, Barbara Lee Wood rated it it was amazing. Not bad, it's a beginning for what the western nights hide.

Now we have a vampire lawman.. Because one never knows who's watching Feb 02, Stanley Marshall rated it it was amazing. Fun I enjoyed this take on vampires and the west, I thought that this author did a good job of showing the characters morality and motivations. I think I am being generous with the 2 stars but for the first quarter of this short story I was quite captivated by the old west, Jack Talon, ex sheriff and gunslinger, dying of TB and his lovely wife Sonya who would do anything to keep Jack alive as the TB was slowly but surely draining his life blood Jack is hired to kill Smythe We spend the second part of the story discussing and debating this issue and "frankly my dear I couldn't give a damn" that's a nice expression: Apr 24, Pam Bales rated it liked it.
This has been on my shelf for a while and I thought I'd better get reading. It is an interesting take on vampires and the old west. Suicide Jack Talon was once a lawman, but is now a dying gambler with consumption. A vampire enters his life and things change. I do have the compilation of three books and have finished this one and started on the second. If you are a fan of vampire books, give this one a try. Jul 16, Randy Grossman rated it it was ok.

No matter how many books I read, there's always one out there that tricks me. Gary Jonas's Night Marshal is one of those books I started reading without much hope of really liking it. Maybe I'd read a few pages and give up, maybe I'd make it through but just be a little disappointed.
Vampires in the Old West? Well, needless to say, I was proven wrong. It's a fascinating book, a great depiction of the Old West, starting with "Suicide" Jack Talon, a good, old-fashioned gunman now struck low by tuberculosis. He's been on both sides of the law, and now he's dying, but he's determined to keep moving, keep playing cards. And if anyone objects to his winning, Jack's not afraid to use his masterful skills with his gun.
He's killed men, many men, and it doesn't bother him. His loyal wife Sofia is a regal beauty who follows Jack to the end, nurses him, tries to stop him from fighting and faces certain knowledge of losing the man she loves. When they turn up in a small mining town, Jack's doing poorly, Sofia's tired of the traveling and someone else is in town, raising hell.
Jack just won't miss out on the fun, for one thing, and also, he knows others will die if he doesn't help out. Many years before, the town had been invaded by vampires, but the city fathers had destroyed the vampires and put their bodies in an abandoned mine. Bumbling drifters unknowingly release one of the blood suckers from his grave and before long, people are dying and Jack Talon is back on the job, trying to protect his fellow humans.
Many good twists in this story make it a good read and a new take on the vampire story. I'm hoping this is a series! I have always loved a great western story and I love paranormal stories. This is the best of both. A fast moving western with a Doc Holiday type lead character.
Dyeing of TB a gambler is turned by a twist of fate into a vampire and his rising from the dead gives a whole new meaning to his life.
