The causes of the protests tend to differ from city to city but the scale and intensity of them has shocked the authorities. They are being widely covered in the German media. Protests against airport expansion are breaking out all over Germany. On 24 th March there will be a national day of action involving protests at Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Leipzig, Dusseldorf and Cologne. The most spectacular protest is happening in Frankfurt. Every Monday evening, since Chancellor Angela Merkel opened the fourth runway in October, up to 5, local residents occupy the terminal in protest against the impacts of the new runway.
They are particularly angry at the way they believe they were misled about the new flight paths and the noise of the planes. There is also real concern that a promised night flight ban between midnight and 5am might now not be introduced on a permanent basis. I addressed the rally at the end of February. If the Munich campaigners do triumph, it will reinforce the message sent out by the famous Heathrow victory that it has become increasingly difficult to build new runways or new airports anywhere in Europe. At Munich the campaigners are putting together an impressive coalition involving climate activists, local residents, sympathetic politicians, environmental experts and academics.
They are challenging the woefully weak economic case for a third runway. Also expect pro-active campaigning: I believe the Munich campaigners can win. But that will be some years off. In the shorter-term, it seems likely that the authorities will need to give something to the protesters complaining about the noise from the airports. If the campaigners can win significant victories, it will show once again just how powerful visible street protests can be. John has written about their visit. The case for a new runway there is weak because the existing runways are nowhere near capacity, most of the flights from Munich are domestic so could transfer to rail, and there is very low unemployment in the area. There have been major protests at several German airports today, against aircraft noise, with whistles, drums and banners. There were about 20, protestors at Frankfurt protesting against noise from the new runway that opened in October. This was the largest protest at the airport since the opening.

Crew was rude when I asked if there was a vegetarian option for the snack. I did request special meals for the trip. Even if they did not have a vegetarian option, they don't need to be rude!! Would have been a lot better if they boarded by seat numbers. Also they made me check in my fairly small and light carry on bag resulting in its contents arriving broken!
Hand luggage not allowed onboard due to being just a bit oversized -- just its wheels only. Never had this problem with the same luggage with other airlines, only with Austrian. From start to finish, Sevdije was in great hands. She had to be in a wheelchair, and there were three connecting flights in countries where she doesn't speak the language. She was all smiles when she arrived in Boston. Not terribly comfortable seats but for short haul flights, just fine.

Some delays in take off, fortunately nothing serious and I was able to take all connections. No hassles on luggage. Seats were comfortable enough by incredibly low economy seat standards. All I got was a little notification that randomly popped up on the app and didn't seem worth taking seriously, and when I asked the flight attendant about it to double-check, she said it was inaccurate.
Stereo type staff unnecessarily and poor customer services from two ladies while I was leaving to exit. The flight was delayed over and over and finally cancelled. We had to go out to the ticket counter to rebook. That meant clearing customs and then going back thru security again. I think any other airline would have rebooked people in the terminal!!! I was pleased that the flight was on time, comfortable and with friendly staff.
I didn't enjoy the wait on a packed bus to the plane and the rocky bus ride to the plane. Very speedily boarding, crew dealt with a passenger with a large bag well. Delayed by 40 minutes at take off although the crew did try to make up as much time as possible en route. Repeated attempts to take my wheelie bag and put it in stowage after repeatedly explaining that there was both computer and sound recording equipment in said wheelie bag. All a bit amateurish and I expect more from BA. There was a lot of carry on luggage on this flight, like the one from Denver to Heathrow, but it was handled in a much better manner.
We were invited to board early if we check in our carry on luggage. During the boarding process the crew gave continious reminders to place items under the seat which fit there, This lead to a very smooth boarding process. No basic drinks and snacks were offered. Of cousrse, meal type foods cost money, but it should be possible to provide something to drink on or snack. No food, no hold luggage allowance. Online checkin process is clunky and buggy.
There wasn't enough seating at the gate, people the elderly included had to sit on the floor or stand for quite some time as boarding started well after the gate closing time printed on the boarding pass.
