Barry Ulanov is a man of diverse background an experience, having written in areas of psychology, history, English, and theology. What better combination can there be to look at the wonderful and complex collection of prayers of St. Augustine remains a pivotal figure, both in church history, and history of the world generally. A man of great passion and great intellect, he combined these in fascinating ways, producing what many call the first real autobiography in his 'Confessions' and putting together a mammoth collection of practical and philosophical theological writings, such that the scholar Isidore of Seville wrote that 'he who claims to have mastered all of Augustine is a liar'.
Nowhere is Augustine's passion and intellect more present than in his prayers. In this brief collection of prayers, Ulanov has categorised the prayers as follows: This is broad territory; Ulanov says, 'what Augustine develops in his life of prayer is nothing less than a geography of interior space.

- Prayers of Augustine | Villanova University;
Prayer is an experience where we search ourselves for God, and the dialogue with God is also a dialogue with the self. Perfect territory for the psychologist, indeed! While these prayers are intensely personal, they are also communal in aspect, in that Augustine wrote these intending them to be read by others - these are meant to be shared and used in a common way rather than a private way. They are each of them both an act of prayer and a model of action in prayer for the reader to follow. Ulanov's selection gives a broad range of alternatives, yet there is remarkable consistency of both tone and content.
The translations of the prayers here are based upon nineteenth and twentieth century translation styles of Augustine, but Ulanov has made extensive person revisions, in part to make the best use of the effect of rhetorical styles Augustine was a master at such devices , and to deal wisely with Augustine's ubiquitous use of scripture.
While these are prayers, this is not a manual of prayers that Augustine put together as a neat and orderly package. These are prayers gleaned from the extensive writing of Augustine - many come from 'Confessions' and 'The City of God', others from sermons and letters, still others from more academic and polemic writing.

Daily Reading for December 16th, Today's Reading. Where was I when I was not in spirit with You? Now, from this time forth, do you, all my desires, grow hot, and flow out upon the Lord Jesus: O, Jesus may he who loves You not be an anathema; may he who loves You not be filled with bitterness.
