  8. Since the years just after WWI, he has been putting on one disguise after another, posing as literally thousands of different people to carry out his mission. Usually, he's impersonating another spy or a gangster or some anonymous stereotype he has chosen for a temporary identity. This time, though, a secret service agent named Barry Lane is brutally killed while investigating a plot to plunge the United States into the Asian war. X has no trouble fixing himself up to look and sound exactly like Lane, of course.

The problem is, he has to cope with Lane's lovely wife Janet, a naive young thing. She doesn't know Barry is now dead, or that the man next to her is really the world's greatest chameleon. You or I might take advantage of a situation like that to enjoy some carnal privileges let's admit it especially if she initiated it, but Agent X is all business and concentrates on uncovering the evil conspiracy. Still, the Agent is human after all, with normal compassion. He doesn't want to tell Janet her husband has been killed, but the longer he waits, the harder it will be to break the news to her.

Even worse, he has to act like Barry in every little way.

Never in his life had he felt so guilty. When he had assumed the disguise of Barry Lane, it had been far more than deception. It was more like theft - the theft of affection that belonged to a dead man. Still, this is an unsettling touch. We seldom see any repercussions for the people who have their identities borrowed by Agent X, and it would make some interesting drama to see him have to go back and straighten out some of the misunderstandings he must be leaving behind him everywhere he operates.

It was written by G. Fleming-Roberts under the uninspired byline "Brant House" International spies are running around Hawaii, trying to arrange an incident which will precipitate a war between the United States and Japan. Secret Agent X and his superior K9 regard this prospect with alarm and horror as well they might and resolve to prevent it. December 7, was still more than three years away at that point. Even if no one at that time was aware of it, looking back now at how war inevitably did come gives the story a twinge of poignancy.

Although the driving force of the story is the plot to force the US into the Pacific war, it mostly concerns itself with an especially sinister cult. Who doesn't love sinister cults? This time out, it's worshippers of Kali, motivated by a fanatic obsession with retrieving the seven mummified hands said to be stolen from the goddess' girdle. Any infidel who has even set eyes on one of these hands, much less defiled it by handling the holy relic, must die at once -- so you can see where there is potential for conflict.

Adding a grisly touch is that they ceremoniously chop off the right hand of their victims, poetically appropriate but still! Although Dal Rama that tall lean Hindu with the trident mark on his forehead thinks he's carrying out his sect's dogma, he actually is being deviously used as a weapon by a mastermind higher up. And in true pulp tradition, the top villain is masquerading somewhere in the cast of characters and of COURSE he or she is the very last one you would expect. Interestingly, these assassins are not Thugs from India but Burmese dacoits very similar and still active today, judging recent from newspaper reports.
