Anna puts her own life in danger to catch the murderer. I enjoyed t The second book in the Anna Sweet series is another great little mystery that is easily read in one sitting. Brenda Chapman has created a very likable and clever heroine in Anna Sweet and it would be great to see her continue solving mysteries in future books. The Hard Fall (Anna Sweet Mysteries, #2) by Brenda Chapman
It's set in the author's hometown of Ottawa. I like this author's writing style. It is written in first person perspective in Anna's voice. Though it's the second in the Anna Sweet series, it works as a stand alone. I look forward to reading the others in this series. However, Anna actually hesitates here, and for good reason. Once upon a time, Anna Sweet was engaged to Jimmy. She thought they had a future together. But then Jimmy cheated on her with Cheri. Suffice it to say, Anna and Cheri are not on the best of terms. After considerable thought, Anna eventually returns to Ottawa where she is given an unexpected opportunity to start over.
The heroine might have left law enforcement but her skills never abandoned her. And as Cheri does what she can to salvage her life, Anna realizes that she might have been too hasty to abandon her career as a police officer. The heroine decides to stay in Ottawa.
She opens up a detective agency called Storm Investigation with another former police officer called Jada. The first few stories find Anna and Jada struggling to land cases significant enough to keep them afloat. You have Jada whose relationship with her conniving brother leads her down a dark path.
The Anna Sweet Mysteries series is pretty short. The books are more like novellas that are rarely longer than a hundred pages. The author has been commended for the suspenseful environment she generates, not to mention the decent plots of her novellas and in-depth character development. Henry, Jada's teenage brother, has been threatened and he and Jada go into hiding. Henry and his school friend, Mandy, had hacked into a dating site where married men are looking for action on the side and they blackmailed a few of the men.
Mandy turns up murdered and it seems that Henry may be next. Understandably, Mandy's family is devastated.

Oct 08, Philip rated it liked it. OK this was a good fill in read and I'll sure read any more works by Brenda Chapman that I can get a hold of. Jul 25, Katie rated it it was amazing Shelves: Anna's partner, Jada Price is missing and it's up to her and the new hire at the company, Nick Roma to find her.
When Jada is found hiding out with her teenage brother, Henry Anna is in the middle of a new mystery, the murder of teenager Mandy Blair and a secret internet dating site. Anna needs to work pretty quickly. Henry's life depends on it. Once again Brenda Chapman does a great job of developing characters in a relatively short amount of time. We revisit some repeat characters like Anna and her father and sister, Jimmy who was first Anna's fiance and ended up married to her sister, and get to learn more about Jada who Anna teamed up with at the end of "My Sister's Keeper" and the mysterious newly hired Nick.
I was able to figure out one part of the story relatively early but then there was an unexpected twist that made everything more exciting. Chapman has a style of writing that just kept me interested and wanting to read the story faster to find out what was going to happen. Another really great, quick read, 2 big thumbs up!
